Sidewalk Film Festival - Day 3

Sidewalk Film Festival

Wrap Up

We are so glad that we decided to capture the many stylish people that attended this years Sidewalk Film Festival.  With this post we want to remember this past weekend with some of our favorite looks from the amazing 3 day event.

Day 1

We spotted Hayden in the bathroom during the Hot&Hot Red Carpet event and just loved her vibe.  There is nothing better than to see people express themselves at every age.  Hayden recently moved to Birmingham from L.A. and is definitely ready to show us how it is done.  For the opening night events she chose a top from Forever 21, cardigan pants by Citizens and sneaker wedges by Bamboo.

Day 2

We met Justin Schultz and Lydia Hyslop at the Sidewalks 16th Birthday Bash at Vulcan Park.  Justin attended the event in a Joseph A. Bank blazer, Hanes t-shirt, Lucky jeans and Converse.  We love this  laid back look on any guy. Lydia chose a look that was more in your face and grabbed our attention right away. She definitely didn't shy away from this summers crop top trend, and for this reason we give her major props. If you are the 'gutsy' type you can snag a similar top from Urban Outfitters.  Other items she wore to compliment the crop were high waisted pants from H&M, skull necklace she picked up at a farmers market in L.A., vintage Capelli bag from a thrift store in Tacoma, WA and Madewell shoes. Lydia can also be seen acting in such films as Burnout and White Reindeer.

We loved the diversity in clothes worn by friends Britton Lynn and Rebecca Graber. Britton, on the left, doesn't have a problem standing out, from her sparkling headband to her flowing top you could not miss her in the crowd.  (TOP by Living Doll - SHORTS by Joes Jeans - SHOES by Lucky)
On the other hand, Rebecca had a classic style and chose to accessorize with green shoes to add a pop of color.  (TOP by H&M - SHORTS by Uniqlo - SHOES by Target)

Our last featured look from the Vulcan Birthday Bash is brought to you by Megan Sauer-Schmaltz.  She accompanied her No Style romper with wedges from Bakers.  If you aren't the bold type try this look with flats and stud earrings.

Day 3

Tara Hulen chose to wear an up-cycled dress by Veronique Vanblaere to Sundays final day of films.  Along with this fabulous dress she wore Chaco shoes and jewelry she bought at the annual Magic City Art Connection held in Lynn Park.  To see more from Veronique and other local artists stop by Naked Art Gallery located at 3831 Clairmont Avenue or online at Nakedartusa.com.

From Left to Right:  Courtney Osborne, James Martin, Jen West & Veronique Vanblaere.

One of our favorite couples, James and Jen, in addition to being stylish, also dabble in the arts.  They just recently reached their funding goal to begin production of their upcoming film, Little Cabbage.  Stay tuned for updates by following Jen's blog TheJenWestQuest.

Getting back to fashion James is wearing a shirt from Target and shoes by one of his favorite brands Clae.  Jen is in head to toe Target because who doesn't love Target! Vero's dress is vintage McCrae's and her headband is from a jacket she got at the thrift store.  As previously noted Vero loves a good up cycle and so do we.

Last but not least the woman everyone told us about, but we never saw.  We stole this picture from Vero's Facebook page.  If anyone captured an image of this woman's full ensemble please post it to instagram and hashtag bhamfashion!!!!!!!

We look forward to meeting more people on the streets of Birmingham, as well as at the many Sidewalk Events that take place throughout the year.  Stay tuned for more Fashion & Film.

Sidewalk Flim Festival - Day 2

Sidewalk Film Festival

Day 2

The Collins sisters chose fashionable yet functional attire to beat the heat at yesterdays festival.  Kristy, sister on the left, chose shorts from Target, top from JC Penny and shoes from Nordstrom Rack.  Amir, sister on the right, prefers to wait for Kristy to get tired of her clothes and then she adds the gifted items to her closet. Her top is from Rainbow, jewelry is from the thrift store and all other items came from Kristy's closet. We hope to see you two at more events in the future.

Kellie Clark decided to curb her hunger with a hotdog by local vendor, Ferocious Dogs.  While waiting for her order I snagged this picture of her fun get up. Her t-shirt is from local Birmingham designer and screen printers Yellow Hammer Creative. Yellow Hammer Creative had a pop up shop at Sidewalk Central, but their actual store is located in Avondale at 3917 2nd Avenue South. A few other items from her day 2 attire include a hat from Urban Outfitters, shoes by Sam Edelman and purse from Zoe's Consignment Shop.

Alex McFry and Megan Wise were walking through Sidewalk Central when I noticed her fun dress from a mile away.  Alex was wearing American Eagle and they both had matching converse shoes.  However, the dress is the reason I decided to stop them. After talking she informed me that since she was missing the Season 8 premiere of Dr. Who, it seemed fitting to wear her Dr. Who dress. They seemed to be rushing to see a movie so I didn't question this too much. After a bit of research I found out that the famous BBC show has their own website selling various things, and of course clothing was one of the things they sold.

Sidewalk Sweet 16 Birthday Party

This year celebrates the Sidewalk Film Festivals sixteenth birthday. The evening event took place at the historic Vulcan Park. The location was the perfect spot to celebrate one of the best events that takes place every year in Birmingham. Since the opening night movie was about a senior class and the party was celebrating the festivals teenage years it seemed fitting that we crown a best dressed King and Queen.  Here were our chosen two and others that tickled our fancy.

We knew the second Lily Li arrived in her matching top and shorts, by Alice+Olivia, that she was our Queen. However, it wasn't until after she was crowned that we found out she was also a costume designer and works on many Birmingham films.  WE LOVE HER!!

Our initial King of the night was Matthew Yarborough, left, but he had already left the event before the crowing took place.  In a last minute decision we chose Chris Izor, right, whose curly locks were the perfect match for our crown.

Mathew's H&M printed pants were the reason we decided to give him the crown.  He chose to pair them with a white top by Japanese brand Uniqlo, belt by Zara and shoes from Urban Outfitters.  Chris was looking good in a shirt from Express, jeans by Levi's and gray Clark high tops.

Caroline Dillard is on the Junior Sidwalk Board and also works at local boutique Soca in Homewood.  Her dress was by love stitch, a new hot brand that can be found at Soca. All of her other items came from Soca as well.

Amber doesn't mind doing a little shopping online.  Her dress and shoes both came from online sites we frequent as well.  Her dress came from hautelook.com and her shoes from shoedazzle.com.  She chose to accessorize her look with a purse from local boutique Charm and jewelry by Betsey Johnson.

Check back tomorrow for more of our favorite looks from Sidewalks birthday party and from Day 3.

Sidewalk Film Festival - Opening Night

Sidewalk Film Festival

Opening Night

Last night was a blast!!  The opening night feature was All American High, a documentary about the 1984 senior class at Torrance High School.  The viewing took place at a packed out Alabama Theater.  The crowd loved it and some people said it even made them shed a few tears.  The director Keva Rosenfeld was in attendance and we got to stamp him after the show.  Here's what he and others chose to wear to last nights event.

From Left to Right:  Courtney Osborne, Katie Ford, Keva Rosenfeld & Jennifer White

Keva is a filmmaker from Shades Eagle Rock, California and is a really really nice guy.  He didn't remember where he got his shirt, but he knew it was from a Soho store in New York and his pants were Lulu Lemon.

Lauren is wearing an eye-catching hot pink top from Soca, jeans from Saks and a Marc Jacobs handbag.  We definitely need more hot pink in our wardrobe.

Cute couple Kristen Gangawere and Griffin Blake.  Kristen is wearing top and pants from Forever 21 and shoes by Vince Camuto.  Griffin works at Billy Reid, so naturally he is sporting one of their tops and a pair of their shoes, but his pants are from J Crew.

Nicholas is a filmmaker from Brooklyn.  He got his jeans from H Lorenzo in Beverly Hills.

Drea Zacharenko is a local Birminghamian and one fun chick.  Her top is from Gap and her necklace and bag are vintage.  However, her skirt is what caught our eye.  She got this fun printed number from etsy.

Amanda Corrao is a filmmaker from Tuscaloosa, AL.  She is wearing a fun coral dress from Urban Outfitters.

This blog originated as a way to capture the amazing array of people that attend the Sidewalk Film Festival.  Last year we saw so many people that we wished we’d photographed.  This year we hope to see even more.  And here are a handful of good reasons to be seen at this years festival.

1.  All American High

2, The Search for General Tso

3. Mood Indigo

4. Living Stars

There's apparently more where that came from!

What to Wear: Rogers Trading Co

For this week's what to wear post, we are featuring Rogers Trading Co, located on Hwy280. Rogers has everything to offer from outdoor clothing/goods to women's clothing to shoes.  We love the entire store, but we are most drawn to the women's contemporary clothing (obviously!).  The buyer/merchandiser, Jennifer Scholl, has a great eye for the best trends as well as basics and classic staples.  She styled the outfits you see below - all of which are super affordable and appropriate for Sidewalk!

Casual day look:  The combination of denim cutoffs, tanks, and sandals is a win in our style book every time.  These cutoffs have a great bleach design, and the bright white of the tank helps to accent it.  A stretchy bandeau would be comfortable and easy to move in during the hot August weather.  Gold jewels and braided sandals complete the look.

Shorts:  Ellison $29.99
Shirt:  Staccato $19.99
Bandeau:  Coobie Intimates $14.99
Multi-layer gold chain necklace $24.99
White beaded chain necklace $19.99
Shoes:  Chaco $100.00

Dressy day look:  THIS ROMPER!!!!  The pattern is so cute and vibrant and easy to accessorize.  It is a sure way to look great and be comfortable.  Pair it with a belt, bandeau and sandals, and you're ready for film screenings in a flash.

Romper:  Peppermint $34.99
Bandeau:  Coobie Intimates $14.99
Belt:  Prana $49.00 Sale Price! $29.99
Shoes:  Birkenstock $120.00

Night look:  White denim is a cute option to wear to the night parties.  Choose a darker top that will contrast nicely with the bright denim.  This blue and green floral top has the perfect dark contrast while still feeling light for summer.  To finish off the look, add simple earrings and a nude heel.

Shirt:  Hem and Thread $29.99
Jeans:  Mono B $34.99
Blue earrings $9.99
Green earrings $9.99

Go see Jennifer and the folks at Rogers, and let them help you style the perfect look for the festival.

This is our last installment of the What to Wear to Sidewalk posts.  We hope they have helped you gain some fashion inspiration.  Stay tuned for our next series of posts!  Stay Chic.
